The Veterinarian Physician Dr. Juan Justino de Araújo Neves was a Sandwich Internship student in Italy, where he developed part of his experimental work. He obtained his Ph.D. in both educational institutions, in a double degree. As he obtained the Ph.D. in 2020, he was hired as a professor in a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in São Paulo state. Tese

Physician Doctors Rossana Teotônio de Farias and Dr. Iramirton Figueirêdo Moreira established a research center at their university based on the projects they developed as graduate students, at UNIP, in cooperation with GP-EEP professors. Tese 1 | Tese 2

Nurse Dr. Taís Masotti Lorenzetti Fortes, who specialized in older people, proposed, in her Ph.D. project, the development of a product to be used in nursing practice, in Geriatrics. From this proposal, two patents for UNIP were deposited at the INPI, National Institute of Industrial Property.

Veterinarian Physician Dr. Cesar Sato began working at Instituto do Coração -INCOR, in the area of regulatory affairs for vaccine development, in Brazil, in the development of COVID-19 detection tests. He is the interlocutor between his current research group and national and foreign companies on pre-clinical safety studies. His primary function is to intervene with suppliers of appropriate medical devices for the intranasal vaccine administration route, the object of study by INCOR. Tese

Biologist Dr. Edinilse Leme studied the water quality captured from dams that are reservoirs of water supply for the Metropolis of São Paulo. From their studies, they verified how the pollution of the waters influenced fish brain tissue and behavior. The critical and significant results have directly impacted the health of the population of this region and should be used as data sources for the establishment of public policies for the management of the reservoir. Tese

The Physician Dr. Ednar Nascimento Coimbra studied the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines in environmental health by using artemia, a microcrustacean, as a bioindicator. From his research, it has been shown that homeopathic medicines can be used to mitigate environmental pollution caused by heavy metals, such as arsenic. Tese

Biologist Dr. Erika Ramos Martins studied the chemical variation and biological behavior of essential oils from an Amazonian plant species in the face of climate change, a compassionate and actual theme due to the anthropic effect over the Amazon Biome. Results showed that some small volatile molecules are essential for the environmental protection of the species from microorganisms. Data directly impacts the comprehension of the relationship of the plant with its environment and, for that reason, becomes a vital tool not only for its preservation but also for Brazilian biodiversity. Tese

Biologist Dr. Flora Cordeiro studied avermectins regarding their toxic potential on the reproductive system of male rats. She initiated one of the most productive research themes in the GP-EEP that resulted in many Dissertations, Thesis, and high impact scientific papers published in important international scientific journals. The intensification of avermectin studies has provided high repercussions. The group contributes significantly to increase the information related to the influence of these substances on the reproductive and central nervous systems. Tese

The Biomedicine Professional Dr. Adriano Pereira studied microsporidiosis as pathogens of zoonotic diseases, a theme of fundamental importance for animals and the environment, which is inserted in the context of One Health, and which is the subject of a research theme that results in impact papers in the veterinary area and animal well-being. Tese

The Biomedicine Professional Dr. José Renildo de Carvalho addressed his studies at murine melanoma microenvironment. He aimed at understanding the dynamics between the tumor cell and immune system cells concerning cell migration and how the interaction between cells can inhibit or induce tumor development and metastasis formation. Tese

The Pharmacist Dr. Humberto Vieira Frias and the Nurse Dr. Cinthia dos Santos Alves developed social interest projects that evaluated the toxicity of buchinha-do-norte, a plant used in folk medicine that is toxic to the reproductive and the central nervous systems. They found that ingestion, even in small doses, of this medicinal plant during the gestational period can lead to behavioral changes in rat pups. Tese 1 | Tese 2

Alicia Herrera Guterrez (Veterinary physician, Mexico)

“I did an academic internship at the Multidisciplinary Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Research Center of the Paulista University (UNIP) while attending the Master’s Degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, in Mexico. It was possible due to the UNIP hospitality and the fact that there was a similarity between the research theme in both laboratories and the theme of my Master’s. I had the opportunity to learn new laboratory techniques and contribute to the experiments of the investigations carried out. The most interesting techniques learned in the laboratory were obtaining macrophages derived from mouse bone marrow for their differentiation from bone marrow cells into macrophages. Later I joined the Ph.D. in the Graduate Program in Environmental and Experimental Pathology at UNIP, continuing with the same research theme. Undoubtedly, academic exchange offers the opportunity to learn about different laboratory techniques and expand scientific knowledge worldwide”.

César Sato (Veterinary Physician, São Paulo)

“I started my Master’s Degree back in 2009 at UNIP and finished it in 2011. During the graduate program, as a pathology researcher, I started working in the pre-clinical regulatory affairs area, in drug, biopharmaceuticals, and medical devices approval at ANVISA. Soon after the defense of my Master’s Degree, the opportunity to take the position as director of studies in dogs, lagomorphs, and rodents arose in this same company, where I worked until 2014. In 2015, I worked as a veterinarian for the largest SPF vivarium in Latin America, taking care of animal health, implementing animal well-being standards, and drafting standard operating procedures. In 2016, I worked at the Butantan Institute as a veterinarian in the regulatory approvals for products such as vaccines and hyper-immune sera. In 2019, I worked in a veterinary CRO as a clinical researcher to approve medicines, products, and veterinary vaccines at MAPA. In 2020, I started working at INCOR as a regulatory affairs analyst in developing a new vaccine and detection tests for Covid-19 for approval at ANVISA. It is my current job”.

Tais Masotti Lorenzetti Fortes (Nurse, São Paulo)

“I joined the Doctorate with many fears of starting to explore a fairly new area for me, involving the laboratory practices. My Master’s Degree was in gerontology with social analysis of aging, and I wanted to continue the approach with the elderly. I was focused on the problems related to recurrent erysipelas linked to the loss of skin integrity in the elderly and how to minimize suffering. Prof. Ivana’s lab staff promptly welcomed me and my project. For a nurse, numerous challenges were faced, such as studying formulations, monitoring bacterial cultures, preparing emulsions, testing their stability, and finally applying them to the elderly. The receptivity of the return participants was the best result ever. To imagine that patent proposals can indeed deliver results on a larger scale is undoubtedly the best reward. I must thank them for having my idea developed and being turned into a reality for many people”.

Fabiana Rodrigues de Santana (Veterinary Physician, Mato Grosso)

“The Graduation Program held at UNIP brought several theoretical and practical learnings in the areas of Pathology and Immunology, which were complemented with the post-doctorate in the area of Parasitology. In this period, I met methods of validation of different treatments that led to a change in the immune system in the face of Leishmania amazonensis infection. All the study and research practices for almost nine years made me a more qualified professional in the area of Veterinary Medicine. The experience of knowing several institutions, their different research groups, and methodologies added a lot to my evolution as a professional”

Graziela Habib Nardi ( Veterinary Physician, São Paulo)

“For some families, the São Paulo City Hall enables animal care through Public Veterinary Hospitals, encouraging responsible ownership. There, animals that are abandoned in public roads, cemeteries, municipal parks, in indigenous villages of the municipality, at public transport stations are inspected by their veterinary doctors. Public hospitals also play an important role in taking care of aggressive dogs and assists in health surveillance actions for the prevention and zoonosis control. Depending on the technical and structural care capacity, several animals are definitively rescued and have a chance to be reintroduced in society in the form of responsible adoption. Over the years, with these activities, a positive impact is generated, informing the population about human and animal care, making it possible to act in a branch of public health."
